Norman Conquest & Medieval Period

Primary school resources to support the teaching of the Medieval period and the Norman Conquest

The Medieval period, also known as the Middle Ages began in 476AD after the fall of the Roman Empire in the western world.                                                                                                                                                                             It lasted over a thousand years. Little is known about this time which is why it is sometimes called the Dark Ages.

The Battle of Hastings in 1066 brought about many changes. William was crowned King of England. The Normans transformed the country they had conquered – from how it was organised and governed to its language, laws and customs. Soon after the Conquest many castles were built across England, in order to secure the Normans’ hold on power.

Many of the items in the box are based on museum exhibits and will help give an insight into one of the most exciting, turbulent and changing eras in our history.
